On Tuesday this/last week the BGE Birdwatching club met for its first 'outing' of the academic year. Outing might be a bit of a misnomer, as we actually met for evening bird-walk around the school. The evening started successfully when Mr. Sneider led our intrepid birders to a tree jam-packed with different bird species - we saw cape robin chats, the ubiquitous speckled mouse birds, red-billed firefinches, bronze manikins and a singing cisticola, which is new addition to the BGE bird list.
Following this, we stopped briefly by the boarding house to admire a pair of variable sunbirds and listen to the beautiful call of the Ruppell's robin-chat. As the light faded, we gathered behind the pond in anticipation of the main event - our resident African Wood Owl. After patiently waiting for a few moments, the owl emerged on cue (spotted first by Aaron) and we enjoyed a wonderful fifteen minutes viewing it, seemingly unperturbed by Mr. Snieder’s safari spotlight, as it swooped from tree to tree.
