The U19 boys basketball team travelled to Strathmore for the KAISSO Premiership Basketball tournament. Their group comprised five schools, with their first match against WNS. BGE started well, defending as a unit and creating opportunities; both schools traded baskets early on, with Ali scoring four points. Mark came on as a substitute and made an instant impact by scoring a 3-pointer to put BGE in front. That is when they lost focus on transition defence and conceded 3 baskets in succession, losing the game 07-16.
The second game was against Light Academy, a game they should have won. The boys went 5-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game and were determined to win, but the 9 fouls they committed proved to be costly as the opponents capitalised on them by scoring the free throws to win the game 06-05. The boys were disappointed not to win and were even more determined to win the next match. The next opponents, Brookhouse, proved to be tough opponents as they scored from fast breaks after BGE turned the ball over on a number of possessions. The opponents clogged the paint to force BGE to take jump shots, which did not work in our favour. The final game against Hillcrest was close throughout, but again the boys lost focus in the last few minutes of the game and ended up losing 06-10. It was a frustrating outing for the boys; now back to the drawing board. I hope they will bounce back and rise above the shortcomings to find success in the future. All the best to Year 13s in their future basketball journey.
