U14 girls & boys hockey vs Peponi

3rd March 2022

Girls' U14 hockey champions

The U14 girls made it 2 in a row at the Peponi hockey tournament with great attacking hockey and composure on the ball. Pool game wins against NIS and Premier resulted in Esther and Natalie voted as MVPs in respective games, a sign that our defensive systems were working brilliantly and supplying the attack with quality ball. A draw with Gitanga was sufficient to progress to the knockout stages with Anika MVP of the final pool game.

A semi-final against Peponi lay ahead with Maggie making some incredible runs, linking well with Muna in defence and Oba in a central midfield position. Despite Natasha and Virginia's efforts up front, the game ended 0-0. A tense shoot out ensued with Tanya as keeper producing a stellar performance, saving runs ins and also a penalty flick to send us to the final.

The final against Braeside proved that the two best teams had progressed and a tight affair saw normal time end with a scoreless draw and with it another shoot out. Virginia and Esther bravely stood forward, slotting their shots easily past the Braeside keeper. Tanya's fierce goalkeeping pressure forced errors from Braeside in each run in crowning BGE champions.

Tanya was deservedly awarded MVP of the overall tournament - a fantastic feat for a goalkeeper, a rare slight at such tournaments.

Boys' U14 hockey tournament

The under 14 boys hockey travelled to Peponi on Saturday with high hopes. The first games against NIS started brightly with Jordan firing the boys to a 1-0 victory. Premier were next and were a different proposition, choosing to defend, which earned them a 0-0 draw, a disappointing result for the boys. Defeat to Gitanga in the final game saw the boys finish third in the group on goal difference. This set up a rankings game with Braeside who took an early lead but the boys settled and played better hockey and got their reward as Jordan equalised. A sudden death shootout saw Sheriff easily save the first one and Maynuel dispatched the winner, meaning the boys finished fifth overall.
