Year 5 Trip

19th June 2023

On Thursday 8th of June, the Year 5's went on a day trip to Karura Forest to take part in some orienteering activities. Orienteering is the skill of using a compass and/or a map to navigate from one point to another. It originated as an activity and hobby in Sweden in the 19th century.

On arrival in Karura, we were split into groups. Before we could get going, we had to get used to using a map so we had some fun activities to help us learn where we were and how to find our way around the forest. We were given a map with different points marked on it and an answer sheet and then we were off! We had to navigate our way through the forest to get to the different points which had the clues for our answer sheet.

We stopped for lunch after the first activity and had a catch-up with our friends before doing our next orienteering activity. Some of the groups wanted to be the first ones back to the base, other groups took the clue-finding at a more relaxed pace and had a chance to look at the scenery and wildlife. There were loads and loads of butterflies as well as a large troop of Sykes monkeys.

The whole day was a very memorable experience and was a lot of fun. We worked with people that we don't usually work with and had a great time learning how to orienteer.
