IB1 Resilience Trip

On the 30th of September

At Karura forest

Students, Form Tutors and Coordinators

To help CP and DP students reflect on the first few weeks of the term; work cooperatively with their peers to improve their resilience strategies and develop skills that will help them learn, all of IB1 participated in a Resilience trip to Karura Forest.

Students were organised into four groups: Watamu, Malindi, Lamu, and Diani and each group worked together to achieve some goals. The activities offered were mountain biking; a nature walk; a boot camp obstacle course, and orienteering or yoga. Students had a chance to do each activity.

Mountain biking involved, as you can guess, biking along Karura’s biking trails through rough terrain; the nature walk had us going into the forest and writing down ten facts we learned from the forest rangers; obstacles required a lot of teamwork, tall or short teamworking was the key to the day’s success and enjoyment.

By the end of the trip, the question ‘what is resilience?’ was answered using what we took away from each activity: trying and pushing through whenever things get tough, being there for and supporting each other, and helping out teammates who might feel left behind, encouraging them - these statements being manifested from experiences of crashing on mountain bikes and getting right back up, supporting and spotting each other during the obstacle course and overall cheering our peers on throughout.

With this resilience trip, we became risk takers by getting out of our comfort zones, inquirers by asking about and learning new interesting facts, more caring through our teamwork and active support, and knowledgeable as we applied what we already knew about the activities to complete them safely and with the maximum amount of fun. After all was said and done, we could all agree that we were feeling accomplished, zen, loose, limber and ready to take on the challenge of IB.
