U11/U13 IAPS Kenton Hockey Tournament

7th March 2022

U13 Boys

This Saturday was the big one for the under 13 A boys hockey team as they travelled to the prestigious IAPS Kenton College Tournament.

The boys faced Peponi House in the first game and started brightly, some colossal defending from Alan and Deyan, backed up by some incredible goalkeeping from Zeyad saw the game finish 0-0, BGE not without chances of their own. The Banda were next and the game followed a similar pattern, an opposition player was heard describing Zeyad as “Spiderman” in goal, again, chances were created, 0-0. St Andrew’s Turi were there for the taking with Samuel, Giacomo and Ryan all having chances but the boys just couldn’t capitalise, 0-0.

The boys went into the final game vs Hillcrest with their fate in their own hands but again, couldn’t quite capitalise on being the better time with the just rewards, another 0-0.

Plenty of positives from the day as the boys peaked just at the right time. Taking a point off both finalists and keeping them from scoring was a gigantic achievement. Zeyad was tied for player of the tournament, voted by opposition coaches and Zeyad, Alan, Deyan and Samuel were all selected to represent the Up Country 15 vs Nairobi 15 in a representative game this coming Sunday, meaning that they were among the best 15 players from up country IAPS schools; an incredible achievement. Well done boys!

U11 Boys

The U11 boys did themselves and the school proud on Saturday, putting in several excellent performances at the IAPS Kenton Hockey Tournament.

Up first was Peponi House, and with pre-tournament rumours circulating that they were a tough team, our boys knew they would have to work hard to get us off to a good start. In truth we were pretty dominant; Siem having a goal disallowed before Essien latched onto a through ball to give us a 1-0 win and send shockwaves through IAPS!

Our second match was against our old friends BGR. There were few chances at either end; the match ending in a 0-0 draw that was a fair reflection of the 12 minutes of play.

Immediately following the BGR draw, our boys went up against Bookhouse Karen. Siem, Samuelle, and Essien (2) with the goals as we put in a dominant display to win 4-0!

Our final group match was against St. Andrews Turi. A 2-0 win, with goals from Siem and Essien, saw us top the group and draw host Kenton College in the semi-finals!

After what seemed like a long wait, the yellows took to the pitch for BGE's first ever IAPS semi-final. We started slowly, allowing Kenton to take the lead with some uncharacteristically sloppy defending. As the game went on we became more confident and started to dominate, until with 4 minutes to go Essien squeezed the ball home from a tight angle to earn us a well-deserved draw. Extra time!

Extra time was a nervous affair, both teams being careful not to concede the golden goal. At the end of the 5 minutes we were still level, so the sem-final would be decided by the lottery of a shootout. Unfortunately, we came up just a little bit short in the shootout, losing narrowly by 2 goals to 1.

Well done to the squad of Ben, Dhruvin, Silas, Boago, Siem, Sammy, Michael, Samuele and Essien for a fantastic day of hockey!
