Year 4 Science: States of matter

15th September 2022

In Science, we are learning about solids, liquids and gases. We learnt that some materials, such as honey, can exist in more than one state (Solid when cold but turns to liquid when exposed to heat or when we add pressure through stirring). To investigate this, we made cornflour slime using cornflour, water and food colouring. We mixed the corn flour with food colouring and kept stirring while adding water.

When we finished, we dipped our fingers in the liquid mixture and the slime flowed through our fingers. When we grabbed, pressed hard on the mixture and tried to roll it in our palms, we formed a ball (solid). After opening our palms and letting the solid ball free, the slime ran through our fingers (liquid). It felt gooey and squishy when we touched it. Our investigation showed that cornflour slime can exist in more than one state (solid and liquid).
